INTRODUCTION: Ask: What season are we in? Here in Texas it is warm most of the year and is only cold in winter. In the north pole and in the south pole, it is cold all year round. Polar bears live in the Arctic, and penguins live in Antarctica. Today we will learn about penguins. After Valentine's Day, we will learn about polar bears.

BOOK: "Be Brave, Little Penguin" by Giles Andreae
ACTION SONG (using clipart of 6 penguins and the numbers 1 to 6) Click here for clipart.
We first sing all the words in English, and then we change a few words to Spanish.
“Six Little Penguins”
Off an iceberg did dive,
One bumped his beak,
Then there were five.
Five little penguins (five pingüinos pequeños)
Swam the ocean floor,
One saw a whale, T
hen there were four.
Four little penguins (four pingüinos pequeños)
Spun around, whee-ee!
One spun off,
Then there were three!
Three little penguins (three pingüinos pequeños),
With nothing to do,
One went fishing,
Then there were two.
Two little penguins (two pingüinos pequeños),
Having lots of fun,
One fell off,
Then there was one.
One little penguin (un pingüino pequeño),
When the day was done,
Went home to sleep,
Then there were none.

Craft Time:
I modeled the rainbow writing page for letter Pp, the Pp dot page, and the craft before the children starting working on them. Before starting the craft, the children write the given letter using 3 different colors of crayons. I have attached a link to the free rainbow writing letters I used. Completing the dot page is optional. You can find free rainbow writing letters here. Since they are free, they lack a dot for where to start. print one off, add the dots with a black marker, and then make copies of that one. You can find the dot pages here.
Click here for a link for letter formation prompts for capital and lowercase letters. Children need to spend more time working on the lowercase letters than on the capital letters.
