January 8, 2020: Toddler Storytime: Winter

(Reminder note: When it is time to read a story, I read the titles of three books and then display them. The children pick which one we read. The ones listed below are the ones they picked.)

Opening song:                                               (Tune: The Farmer in the Dell")

             We tap hola like this
We tap ho la like this
                 Hi-ho cherry
             We tap hola like this

               Continue with other verses:
                  We drop hola like this...
                   We circle hola like this...
                 We spin hola like this...
                We toss hola like this..
                 We roll hola like this....
                     We stomp hola like this...

I explained that there are four season: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Fall just ended, and now it is winter. I described some of the signs of winter.

Book: "Red Sled" by Lita Judge

I gave each parent a copy of the words to all the songs that went with the theme. Then I gave each child a clip art snowflake. This is a link to the document containing the clip art I used.

Movement song using snowflake clip art:

“Snowflake, Snowflake”(Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")

Snowflake, snowflake, fancy free.
Snowflake, snowflake, dance with me.
Touch my head, then my toes.
Land on my head where the cold wind blows.
Snowflake, snowflake, turn around.
Snowflake, snowflake, touch the ground.

Snowflake, snowflake, fancy free.
Snowflake, snowflake, dance with me.
Touch my elbow, then my shoulder,
Land on my chin where it's a little bit colder.
Snowflake, snowflake, turn around.
Snowflake, snowflake, touch the ground.

Snowflake, snowflake, fancy free.
Snowflake, snowflake, dance with me.
Touch my ear, then my knees.
Snowflake, I'm about to freeze!
Snowflake, snowflake, fancy free.
Snowflake, snowflake, dance with me.

Shaker song: (Before this song, we pretended to put mittens on our hands.)

“Mittens on My Hands”
(Sung To: 'Wheels on the Bus')

The mittens on my hands
Keep me warm
Keep me warm
Keep me warm
The mittens on my hands
Keep me warm
All winter long!

Book: "Bad Kitty Does Not Like Snow" by Nick Bruel

I gave each child a pile of cotton balls. I told them this would be our "Texas snow."

Movement song:

“Snowball”(Tune: “Are You Sleeping?”

Make a snowball, make a snowball
Throw it now, throw it now
Make a snowball, make a snowball
Throw it now, throw it now

(We did it two times.)

Movement song: "Hokey Pokey" with scarves

Goodbye Song:

We tap adios like this
 We tap adios like this
Hi-ho cherry
