Toddler and Preschool Christmas Crafts

1. Beaded Christmas Tree Ornament    (both toddler and preschool)

I modified an idea from happyhooligans.ca
This is a link  to the storytime plan that went with this craft.

     Material

   1. Beads in a variety of colors
    2. 2 pipe cleaners (I provided a variety of colors.)
    3. Star beads
    4. Elastic cord or string
    5. Sequin stars
    6. Hot glue gun

Instructions:
    1. Select two pipe cleaners in desired color
    2. String beads on each one keeping the beads spaced a little apart
    3. An adult glues the two pipe cleaners together with a hot glue gun.
    4. Twist the two ends together that were glued together to help them stay in place
    5. Slide a bead over this spot to hide it
    6. Fold the last .25 inch of each end of the pipe cleaner over on itself to prevent beads from coming off. At this stage, only glue the bottom end in place.
    7. Begin shaping the pipe cleaners into a tree by bending
the bottom of the second pipe cleaner backwards after about the first three inches.
    8. Continue bending the pipe cleaners into a set of rows with each row a little shorter than the last one.
    9. Remove any beads that are in the last .5 inches of the top of the tree.
   10. Place a star bead on the tree. If you don't have star beads, just glue a star sequin over a regular bead.
   11. Bend the remaining pipe cleaner under itself, and add one or two more beads.
   12. Glue the tip of the end of the pipe cleaner to the pipe cleaner directly across from it.
   13. Slip a string or cord through the hole you just created, and make it into a hook.

2.   Paper Plate Christmas Tree Whirligig   (Preschool)

 Source of original idea: https://www.redtedart.com/paper-plate-christmas-tree-whirligig/
This is a link to the storytime plan that went with this craft.

         Materials:

Instructions: First, paint the paper plate. After it is dry, cut it into a spiral shape. Then add pom poms, stickers, glitter glue, etc. to decorate. Download a star template. Run on yellow paper. Cut out two stars. Glue a length of string to the underside of the top of the spiral. Glue the two paper stars together with the string in the middle.

3.  Paper Plate Christmas Tree Craft      (Preschool)

Idea modified from here

Materials:
1. 6 inch paper plate
2. Green yarn
3. Star sequins
4. Mini pom poms
5. Heart shaped beads
6. Snowflake sequins
7. Scissors
8. Hole punch
9. Brown construction paper
10. Liquid glue
11. Pencil
12. Plastic yarn needle (optional)
13. Tape
14. Markers

Instructions:

1. Use a pencil to draw a triangle in the middle of the paper plate.
2. Bend the paper plate enough to cut a hole in the middle of the triangle.
3. Cut out the triangle.
4. Use the hole punch to make holes on all three sides of the triangle.
5. Cut a long length of green yarn. If using a needle, thread one end of the yarn through the needle, and secure the other end of the yarn to the back of the paper plate with tape.
6. Start threading the green yarn through the holes in the paper plate. I threaded the yarn straight across to the whole on the other side, but this is not required.
7. If you run out of yarn before you have threaded through ever hole, cut another length of yarn and continue. When you finish threading, tape the end of the yarn to the back of the paper plate.
8. Cut a tree trunk from brown construction. Glue this to the bottom of the tree.
9. Glue a sequin star to the top of the tree.
10. Glue ornaments onto the tree.
11. If desired, the child can decorate the paper plate with markers.
12. If desired, can trim paper plate to make it smaller.
