Hibernation Crafts for Toddlers and Preschoolers

1. Hibernating Bear in Winter         (toddler and preschool)

Modified idea from here
Materials:

1. Half a paper plate
2. Bear template from link listed above printed on brown construction paper
3. Cotton balls
4. Sticks for trees
5. Dead leaves
6. Snow stickers (optional)
7. Glue
8. Scissors
9. Gray paint
10. Black paint
11. Gray or light blue construction paper
12. Glue gun
13. Black marker

Instructions:

1. Cut a paper plate in half. Cut along the line separating the inner part of the plate from the ridges.
2. The outside piece should resemble a bridge. This part will be painted gray.
3. The inside piece will be for the inside of the cave. This part will be painted black.
4. Glue the black cave onto your construction paper.
5. Put glue along just the most outer part of the gray piece representing the outside of the cave. Glue the gray piece to the outside of the black piece.
6. Arrange the gathered sticks to resemble trees. Glue these into place with a glue gun.
7. Pull the cotton apart so that it will lie more flat and resemble snow. Glue some along the bottom of the paper and over the outside gray part of the cave.
8. Glue some dead leaves to the inside of the cave.
9. Print the image of the bear out onto brown construction paper. Cut it out, draw a face on it, and glue it to the inside of the cave.
10. Add snow stickers or more cotton to the sky.

2.  Picture Scenes of Animals in Winter    (toddler and preschool)

I modified idea for this craft from one at http://ourcraftsnthings.com/category/animals-in-winter/.
All four of these are examples I prepared to show the children various ways to use the materials.

Materials:
1. White piece of construction paper for background
2. Brown construction paper
3. Black construction paper
4. Blue construction paper
5. Document containing labeled clip art of animals and trees

6. Cotton balls to add snow (optional)
6. Scissors
7. Glue

Instructions:
1. The child picks three or four animals that he or she would like to make a picture with.
2. Those animals are cut out and colored.
3. Using the information in the document, discuss where each animal lives in winter.
4. Cut a brown piece of construction paper in half. Glue it to the white paper.
5. If a chosen animal lives in a body of water, add a lake or river to the paper using blue construction paper.
6. If a chosen animal lives underground, add a tunnel to the paper using black construction paper.

7. If a chosen animal lives in a cave, create a cave by cutting or tearing a cave out of brown and black construction paper.
8. If an animal lives inside of a tree, cut out and add a tree to the picture.
9. Glue all the needed elements to the picture.
10. Glue the animals to the element (tree, river, tunnel, cave) that they each correspond with.
12. If desired, you can pull apart some cotton balls, and glue them on top of the ground for snow. (We don't get much snow in Texas.)
